Iontophoresis Therapy

Iontophoresis Therapy

Iontophoresis is the application of medicated patches (veterinarian prescribed) to the skin which are activated by small amounts of electrical current.

Iontophoresis is noninvasive and provides a trans-dural (through the skin) delivery of medications. This therapy does not cause tissue damage and does not cause the infections needles may.

Horse Iontophoresis Therapy

Why Phorese?

Benefits and Applications of Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis is an effective treatment because it helps to smooth the rough edges of calcified joints (i.e. ringbone, kissing spine, hocks, etc.) and calm irritated ligaments (i.e. an ankle’s annular ligaments).

  • Phoresing can improve a horse’s recovery time from suspensory ligament injuries, ring bone, sore heels, shin splints, puffy ankles (annular ligament syndrome), and more.
  • Phoresing enhances the benefits of MCT by further reducing pain and inflammation, providing more relief than MCT alone.
  • Phoresing can be used to relieve injection site pain or as an effective and noninvasive alternative to regular injections.
For horses that receive joint injections, phoresing is a noninvasive way to either replace or prolong the effectiveness of regular injections.

Equine Bodywork is not a veterinary service but a cooperative form of treatment. It should not be considered an equivalent or substitute for regular veterinary care. Bernardo Equine Therapy does not diagnose an injury or prescribe medications for your horse.

Benefits and Applications of Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis is a highly effective treatment with many benefits. A few reasons to phorse include helping to smooth the rough edges of calcified joints (i.e., for treating ringbone, kissing spine, hocks, etc.) and soothing irritated ligaments (i.e., an ankle’s annular ligaments).

  1. Iontophoresis can bring back horses suffering from suspensory ligament injuries, ringbone, sore heels, shin splints, puffy ankles (annular ligament syndrome), and more.
  2. For horses with unsuccessful treatments with other therapies, such as shockwave and stem cells, iontophoresis provides healing support. If used first, it can often heal the injuries on its own.
  3. Phoresing your horse enhances the benefits of current microcurrent treatment by further reducing pain and inflammation, providing more relief than MCT alone.
  4. Horses get sore from constant injections, which don’t always resolve the issue. Phoresing can relieve injection site pain as an effective and noninvasive alternative to regular injections.
